Switchfoot Live at TJC?

Thursday night Switchfoot graced the tiny, quaint stage in Wise Auditorium on the TJC campus. Yes, Tyler Junior College, Tyler Texas. When I first heard that the student life department was bringing them in for a concert, I couldn’t believe it. TJC apparently has a nice budget for student life activities. Switchfoot’s positive, inspiration, and spiritually motivating lyrics and solid rock groove have invaded many running playlists, car rides, and audio reference examples for about 10 years now.

We arrived around 7:30pm on Thursday. Switchfoot was headlining the concert and began around 9:30. This was a private concert for TJC students only and was not open to the public or even announced on their site. Great seats; middle left to right and about 50 foot from stage. There were seriously 300-400 people at this event and for those that know how big this band is that was crazy as they typically sell out huge venues. It was basically a private concert from one of my favorite bands. Oh, and did I mention it was free? These guys were genuine and polite, tender and thankful. Very respectful and pleasant and performed as if they were in there typical large theater or stadium stadium. Fantastic experience and a moving evening for me personally.

I wanted to brag about this a bit but mainly wanted to pass along the inspiration to you by quoting some of their lyrics. Most of their lyrics deal with our sick and filthy life and the cure found only in Christ and the idea of doing more than the norm with this short life, doing something that actually lasts for eternity. Enjoy!

“Mess of Me”

I am my own affliction
I am my own disease
There ain´t no drug that they could sell
Ah there ain´t no drugs to make me well
There ain´t no drug

There ain´t no drug
There ain´t no drug
It´s not enough
The sickness is myself

I made a mess of me I wanna get back the rest of me
I made a mess of me I wanna spend the rest of my life alive
I made a mess of me I wanna the get back rest of me
I made a mess of me I wanna spend the rest of my life alive
The rest of my life alive!

“Meant to live”

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Somewhere we live inside
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

“This is your life”

Yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead
Yesterday is a promise that you’ve broken
Don’t close your eyes, don’t close your eyes
This is your life and today is all you’ve got now
Yeah, and today is all you’ll ever have.
Don’t close your eyes. Don’t close your eyes.

This is your life, are you who you want to be?
This is your life, are you who you want to be?
This is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be?
When the world was younger and you had everything to lose.
